Links for the Weekend

Fireflies in the summertime are a delight and I remember running around catching them as a kid.  Unfortunately we don’t get those here in the UK.  But these amazing photos by Japanese photographer Tsuneaki Hiramatsu show why they’re so magical.

Apparently antibiotics will not cure acute sinus infections.  Boo.  What’s a girl to do then?

The process of movie making has always amazed me.  This behind the scenes look at some of the sets from Harry Potter gives you a great glimpse into the transformation that occurs between set and screen.

Snow drawings.

Teesha Moore’s journal pages are just beyond amazing.  She also has some great video tutorials about her artistic process.

I’ve watched a fair amount of Thomas the Tank Engine and I totally get the theory that Thomas the Tank Engine Lives in a Totalitarian Dystopia.

Are French mothers really better?  I don’t know if they are but maybe I could at least learn a few lessons here about how to get my kid to eat vegetables.

All of Chewbacca’s dialogue from Star Wars on a sticky note.

I’ve got a son but as a girl and techie myself, I think it’s vitally important that girls are equally encouraged to develop math and science skills from an early age.  The Wandering Scientist has a great discussion about “girly” toys that can build these skills and the recent Lego controversy.

Congratulations Penn Staters on Another Successful THON

The annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon was one of the most influential and rewarding activities in which I was involved during my years at Penn State.  This year’s event was held over the weekend and I’m staggered by the results.

In 1991, the last year I was involved, the year I graduated, we raised $785,835.  A figure that at the time was amazing to all of us involved.

But this year, twenty-one years later, they raised

$10.686,924.83

What an achievement.  Here’s my own little jump for joy to congratulate all the student volunteers and dancers that made this happen.

For the kids.

This week I crossed the threshold into “soccer mom” territory as the little man went to his first ever football class.  At this age it’s mainly just a bunch of little kids running around like mad but boy did he have fun.

Police sketches of famous literary criminals.  For any bookworm, this is fascinating stuff.

Barack Obama has made us a mixtape!

We’re a big fan of dinosaurs in this house so I found these drawings of T-Rex trying to do everyday things with his incredibly short arms pretty darn funny.

Problem with Procrastination?  Try This: Do Nothing.  Oh, this is for me.

What happens in bookstores at night.

Dogs!  Underwater!  How can these gorgeous photos not put a smile on your face?  Well, at least if you’re a dog person like me.

Happy weekend! x

According to this infographic, the “micro-naps” I’ve been getting during episodes of Peppa Pig are surprisingly effective.

And talking about sleep deprivation, I drink a lot of coffee.  But reading this article about what caffeine actually does to your brain makes me wonder if I’ve built up too much of a tolerance for it to do me any good.  Oh, but I do so enjoy I good cup of coffee.
