A Cuppa Tea

A Cuppa Tea Solves Everything

Although I’ve been in England now for over three years, I have not yet developed an appreciation for tea.  Maybe it’s just that I haven’t really tried. What with all my coffee drinking, when do I have time to fit it in?

But I am continually amazed to discover that tea is the most powerful beverage known to man and can make any problem you have go away.

Take EastEnders, quite possibly one of the most depressing shows ever on television.  On the show dear Dot Branning is always at the ready with a cuppa to make everyone’s problems go away.

Just found out your house burned down?  Here, have a cuppa. It will all be OK.

Just found out your boyfriend slept with your mother?  I’ll put the kettle on and we’ll have a cuppa.

But it’s not just on TV and in popular culture where I’ve seen this.

I’ve recently been in and out of the hospital with my Crohn’s.  And I’ve been amused to find that each time when I wake up from my procedure, the first thing they offer me is a cup of tea.  I haven’t eaten for two days, I’m completely dehydrated, and I have low blood pressure.  Wouldn’t a bit of water or juice be a more appropriate beverage for the situation?  Apparently not.  Never mind the wisdom of leaving a porcelain cup with a scalding beverage in the hands of someone just coming off heavy sedatives.

Is there no situation that doesn’t call for a cuppa tea?

The British are the largest per capita tea consumers in the world.  Maybe it’s because they know a secret the rest of us don’t.  That tea isn’t just a nice warm beverage.  It will fix everything that’s wrong in your life.

Tea drinkers, please help me understand.  I’ll put the kettle on.

Ooo! Play-Doh

Learning to Make Recognizable Play-Doh Animals

One of the things I put on my life list was #80, making recognizable Play-Doh animals.  I realize this isn’t one of those amazing “once in a lifetime” experiences that you’d think should be on a life list.  I want lots of these things in my life, but for most of us life can’t be filled with these on a daily basis.  We’ve got to fill it with lots of everyday adventures as well, sometimes even whimsical things that don’t serve any higher purpose other than making us smile.  Sometimes simply things we’d enjoy sharing with someone we love.

Well Play-Doh, the monkey and I already do A LOT of Play-Doh (and Plasticine) in this house and I’m sure this will continue to be the case for some time.  So I figure why not kick it up a notch, make Play-Doh a little more fun and learn to create an endless cast of creatures, animals that we can bring to life at a moments notice.  And I don’t mean the cutout kind.  We’ve got little cutouts to make cats and dogs and butterflies and the like.  I want something more challenging, I want to mold this crazy substance into animal shapes from nothing.

Now the key word here is “recognizable.”  Anyone can make a shape out of a lump of clay.  But when my son says “cat”, I want it to be because I intended to make a cat, not because I tried to make horse and it went horribly wrong.

So to give you some perspective on the steepness of my learning curve, I thought I’d share with you where I am on this journey, square one if you will.

First, I present “Dinosaur” and “Snake.”  To be fair, snake is really not that much of a challenge.  I think I’ve got that mastered.  But the dinosaur, that looks like some creature popping out of a floppy wizard’s hat.

Dinosaur and Snake

And then there is “Seal.”  Do not ask me why he asked me to make a seal.  That one came out of no where.

Play-Doh Seal

I have found this article on how to make clay animals which has a few tips I’ll try.  In fact, this technique might help me with the problem I’ve had with arms and legs constantly falling off.

The more I’ve used Play-Doh I’ve also learned that it bugs the crap out of me when the colors get all mixed up.  I want them to stay separate and pure.  A quick survey of my friends revealed that I am not alone.  But I’ve got to let that go.  Life is too short to worry about whether a bit of red gets in the white.  Just go with the flow and enjoy the pink.

Stay tuned…

Good Reads

Which Do You Prefer: eBook or Paper Book?

I don’t know about you but I’m still on the fence about the e-book vs printed book debate.

E-books are certainly the future.  For evidence of that, you need to look no further than the fact that Kerry Wilkinson’s book Locked In, has recently become the first self-published e-book to be Amazon’s top seller.  Plus, my grandmother now has a Kindle so I think they’re well past the “early adopter” phase.

Ever since I got an iPad I’ve certainly been reading more e-books than paper books.  I like the instant gratification of downloading a book I want as soon as I hear about it.  I enjoy being able to add notes and highlights without feeling the guilt over destroying a paper book.  I like that I can see the content that other people found interesting.  An integrated dictionary?  Awesome.  And you can dive deeper into any topic by easily connecting to linked references in the book.

E-books win hands down for convenience as I can carry an entire library around to entertain me during waits at the doctor’s office, etc.  I’m currently reading the Steve Jobs biography which in its paper form is massive and heavy. Certainly not something I’d carry around in my handbag.  I like that I never have to worry about a reading light because there’s one built-in. Of course, setting aside the issue of eye strain.  Plus I feel like I read e-books faster. Maybe I can skim the content quicker, I don’t know.  Maybe it’s all in my head.

But there is still something about a printed book.  E-books just don’t have that comfort factor.  Snuggling up on a cold day by the fire with your iPad (or whatever gadget you choose) well, it just isn’t snuggly.  And at the beach (my favorite all time place to read) I’d rather have a paper book, something I don’t mind covering with sand and sunscreen.  I’ve also always been a fan of sharing books among friends and the printed book reins supreme here. Yes, you can lend Kindle books but only on specific titles and not a single Kindle book that I have is eligible for lending.

And the book store, oh I used to love going to the book store.  It’s the ambiance and warmth of the place where I’d lose myself in the stacks of great literature.  I could spend hours in a book store just wandering around picking up books with compelling cover art.  I no longer have hours to kill in a book store (toddler!), but the sense of calm and peace I’d get browsing their aisles, I certainly don’t get that from Amazon.

For me, I don’t want to choose.  I want to enjoy them both for what they each excel at.  For me, there is a place in my life for both e-books and printed books.

Do you have a preference?  Which side of the fence to you sit on?

When Good Feet Go Bad

I‘ve been thinking about feet again.  I don’t know why I seem to have a feet thing lately, it’s just one of those things.  First, it was taking the sparkly shoes for a walk.  Now, I’m thinking about what happens to feet over time.  This all popped into my head last week when I took the photo above of the Little Monkey’s feet.  Something about the light and well, his feet.

I’ve had a thing about his feet from the very beginning.  What is it about little baby feet that makes them just so darn cute? I could kiss and squeeze his little feet all day long.  They’re just so perfect and soft.  The sweetest little things ever.

Baby Feet

But where do feet go so wrong?  Can you think of a single adult in your life whose feet make you say to yourself “wow, those are the cutest most amazing things ever?”  “I need to kiss these more often.”  I didn’t think so.  Feet have it tough don’t they?  We treat them horribly and shove them into unnatural positions.  And they end up rough and callused and usually pretty darn ugly.

Oh, but they start out with such promise.  Don’t we all?
