Springtime Yellow That Doesn’t Drive Me Mad

Springtime in Southern Virginia was always both my favorite and least favorite time of the year.  My favorite because of the warm (but not too warm) sunny weather and the flowers coming into bloom.  My least favorite because of the pollen from said flowers and trees.  The trees in particular would create a dusty yellow pollen that covered everything in sight.  Yellow cars, yellow roads, rivers of yellow running down the streets to the drains.  Yellow dust everywhere.  Pollen was such a problem that the local news channels even included a “pollen count” as part of the weather forecast.

For a month or two, that yellow dust was my nemesis.  Springtime meant sneezing, watery, itchy eyes, and a runny nose.  And if I chose not to suffer the miseries of hay fever, I’d walk around in a fog induced by allergy medicine.

But here in England, there are glorious things that bloom in the springtime, brilliant yellow amazing things that don’t start me wheezing.  Rapeseed fields specifically.  I’d never heard of rapeseed before I moved here (basically it’s where canola oil comes from).  But it’s one of the best things about the English countryside in Spring.

And while I love to capture the golden-yellow fields against the backdrop of a brilliant blue sky, sometimes catching them against an amazingly dark and foreboding sky is just as good.

Living in a modern western society, it’s easy to take for granted things like basic immunizations that you and your family automatically have access to.  But 1.5 million children die every year from vaccine preventable disease.  As it’s World Immunization Week take a moment to learn more about the issue and how you can give a child a shot at life.

I’ll admit that I am easily distracted and I think I feel more scatter brained these days than ever before.  So I’m loving these great reminders from a fellow recovering lazyholic.

Should I check my email?  See previous comment about being easily distracted.

I’m not sure I fully understood the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England before I moved here.  But I’ve been here long enough to know that if you don’t, you can easily offend.

WOW.  A dad captures this amazing film of his daughter’s changing face from birth to age 12.  And I love how you can see her grow into her personality as well.

This giant Stonehenge bouncy castle was on the news the other night and I have to say it looks like an amazing bit of fun.

I’m a big fan of using photography as a medium to capture all the big and little moments in my life.  And with digital cameras and phone cameras it’s easier than ever to capture and share photos.  On May 15th, no matter what kind of camera or photography experience you have, you can join a unique worldwide event to capture perspectives on daily life.  Watch the video and learn more about how you can take part and share what’s important in your life.

Using Your iPhone to Capture Great Macro Shots

Macro photography produces some amazingly gorgeous images and it’s always been one of my favorite styles of photography.  The way these close up photographs capture the intricate details of the world around us, the details that are easily overlooked, is astounding.  But to create really stunning macro images you do need the right camera gear, something I haven’t decided to invest in yet.  It really just hasn’t been super high on my priority list at this time in my life.

But, enter my trusty iPhone.  Using some birthday gift vouchers (Thanks!), I treated myself to an Olloclip. What’s a Olloclip you ask?  Well, it’s this ingenious little gadget with fish-eye, wide-angle, and macro lenses that you clip onto your iPhone.  Yes, I’m taking my iPhone photography to the next level and attaching an external lens to my phone.  I know that sounds crazy.

So far though, I’m loving this thing.  My one and only gripe is having to take the case off my phone to attach it but that’s really not a big deal.  I captured all the images above with the Olloclip macro lens attached and they are all straight out of camera and unedited.  I shot some of them with the native Camera app and some with Hipstamatic (Loftus lens, Blanko Freedom 13 film).

Things I’ve learned about shooting with this macro lens so far:

  1. You need good light.
  2. Your ideal subject is stationary.
  3. You need a steady hand or a tripod.
  4. You need to get really, really, really close to your subject.

So, an iPhone with the Olloclip won’t be the best camera gear for getting macro shots of dangerous living animals.  But, for plenty of other subjects it’s a great choice for experimenting with macro photography on your iPhone.  I haven’t yet tried the fish-eye or wide-angle lenses.  If you’re into iPhone photography and have a iPhone 4 or 4s, this is definitely an accessory to consider.

And, as a bonus, it will give you an excuse to treat yourself to some flowers.

Visiting the Minpin Forest

“Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.  Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”

– Roald Dahl

One of the books we’ve been reading lately is The Minpins by Roald Dahl.  A delightful story about a little boy demonstrating great bravery as he finds adventure and magic in the forest.  And, I didn’t realize until our recent visit to the Roald Dahl Story Museum, that this was the last book he wrote.

We’d been reading the book the other morning and then took a trip to Badbury Clump to catch the bluebells in bloom and get out of the house for some fresh air.  And I couldn’t help but think in the darkness of the wood, is this the kind of place that Dahl imagined?  It wasn’t quite full of the giant trees that Dahl describes but they did blot out the gloomy sky allowing only a brief moment of sunlight to break through their canopy.  This was certainly a place where magic might be hidden.

A Walk in the Woods

The Minpins fresh in our mind from the morning, we even knocked on a few trees to see if any of the tiny magical creatures were at home.  We knocked on several but unfortunately the Minpins must have been out for the day.  Or maybe it was just the grown ups scaring them away.

It’s springtime in England and that means that one of my favorite things is back, the beautiful yellow rapeseed fields across the countryside.  The patchwork quilt of bright yellow that covers the ground is just an amazing sight.

It’s hard being two.

I’m not saying pressure your kids into doing this but maybe this girl will grow up with a healthy appreciation for science.

I know when I look through the thousands of photos I take each year, I’m in a very small percentage.  That’s the downside of being behind the camera.  But this article has inspired me to get busy taking more photos of me, to have the proof of my life, not just everyone else’s.

The world needs more girl geeks.  Here’s why it matters.
