Everyday Adventures

Everyday Moments: Favorite Things

Zebra.  Or as we now call him, “Zezza.”  He’s the cuddly zebra that has been my son’s best friend since he was a baby.  I don’t know how it happened.  You introduce your child to dozens of cuddly creatures when they’re babies, collecting them as if you’re building a zoo.  But then one rises above the rest and becomes more important and beloved than all the others.  How do they choose?

With “Zezza”  I think it had something to do with the ears.  The little man would rub Zezza’s soft cuddly ears between his fingers when he was trying to go to sleep.  I always knew he was about ready to fall asleep when his fingers went for the ears.

I’ve tried to buy another one, an emergency backup in the event of disaster, but I can’t find them anywhere. Zezza came in a package from America, a baby gift from a childhood friend.  I guess part of me knows that any replacement would never be the same anyway.  It’s fur would be too new, not faded and worn with love. So I’ve risked it. I’ve allowed Zezza to leave the confines of our house on occasion, though he mostly stays behind. After all, Zezza needs to get his rest, he works so hard at night-time helping the little man sleep. But Zezza has traveled transatlantically. And, he’s journeyed with us to the hospital when the little man had a coughing & vomiting episode that in the end was nothing.

Now that my little man is a bit older, I see that their friendship has changed and grown.  It’s not just about cuddly ears, it’s about companionship.  I hear him talking in bed to Zezza, telling him bedtime stories, recounting his day, telling him it’s time to go to bed.  Our bed time routine now involves me giving Zezza a hug and kiss good night as well. And we even have a little blanket that we sometimes tuck Zezza into.  We make sure his head has a nice soft spot on the pillow.

It surprised me to find that as I looked through my photos I, in fact, had evidence of their first meeting.  Zezza arrived from America when the little man was just two months old. I remember placing them on the floor together, letting them get to know each other. I know that one day he’ll grow out of his friendship with Zezza but now, I know he couldn’t have a better friend.

52 Weeks of Us, Running

52 of Me: Twenty-Three

Tomorrow is the next 10K race in my Crohn’s Running Challenge and I admit, I’m a bit scared.

First, I’ve been on a long holiday this month.  Yes, I did manage to get myself up and out the door early to go running a couple of times on my trip.  (Which, by the way, is a really great way to experience a new city).  But compared to how I’d been training for my last 10K, my training regimen the past few weeks hasn’t been very strict.  My biggest accomplishment some days has just been getting out the door to run, never mind trying to do specific training intervals, sprints, etc.

Second, this race, the Zest Alpro Challenge, is more than just a 10K, it’s an “adventure” 10K. Honestly, I’m not sure what to expect other than doing a lot more than just running and getting really muddy.  There are things on the course map labeled “Pontoon Maze, ” “Zig Zag Balance Beam,” and “Inflatable Assault Course Slide.”  What on earth have a gotten myself into?

So my goals for this race are pretty simple and I’m not worried about my time at all.

Finish.  Don’t hurt myself.  Have fun.  Oh, and don’t crap myself.

Wish me luck!  And, help me support Crohn’s and Colitis UK by sponsoring me over on my JustGiving page (or the handy little button over there on the right).

Travels

10 on 10

This month I’m excited to be joining up with another group of fellow photographers for a regular monthly series “10 on 10.”  On the 10th of each month we post 10 of our favorite images from the previous month.  It will be good to have such an open-ended topic, I can share shots I love but that might otherwise just languish on my hard drive.  And, because I’ve recently returned from holiday, this month I’m sharing a selection of favorites from my trip.

One thing I thoroughly enjoyed about shooting on this trip was actually giving my iPhone a little more love.  I really hadn’t been shooting much with it lately but I found that as a travel camera, the iPhone is brilliant. Because it’s small and lightweight, I felt free to just enjoy my surroundings and the people I was with, all while still documenting the details of the trip.  I didn’t have a big camera in front of my face all the time or feel like a sherpa carrying loads of gear.  In fact, I felt that my images benefited by using the iPhone, I focused on really capturing the subject and less on the technicalities of shooting.

Travel and architecture photography is definitely out of my comfort zone, or at least I’m well out of practice.  I’ve been in portrait, people, family, lifestyle shooting mode of late.  This was a great opportunity to get out of my usual routine (or rut!) and focus on subject matter that I don’t regularly shoot.  And it served as a great reminder that I need to take the time to step out of my photography comfort zone.  Not only are there so many interesting sights to capture in the world around us, but it’s also how I’ll continue to grow as a photographer.

In Barcelona, the first stop on our trip, I found a muse in Antoni Gaudi.  His genius is evident throughout Barcelona and I found the geometry in his work captivating, how he took inspiration from the natural world and tried to recreate those forms in his designs.  Sea shells, turtles, trees, waves, bones, you can see these in the lines and shapes of his buildings.

Enjoy a few of my favorites from La Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Casa Batlló, and Parc Güell.

52 Weeks of Us

52 of Him and Me: Twenty-Two

It’s been a difficult thing to find my motivation to start blogging again after 10 days holiday.  Ten days with friends in an amazing place I’d never been, and mostly without internet access, has me struggling to share photos, to sit at my keyboard and type, wondering whether anyone will even notice if my 52 week series just stops.

But I decided to show up.

I greatly anticipated my child-free holiday, much-needed time for me to recharge the batteries drained by parenthood.  The thing is though, I missed my little man terribly.  His little face as he ran to greet me at the airport was the most magical thing I’ve ever seen.  And this week I’ve enjoyed spending time with him, looking at our time together in a different light, appreciating him and the time we have together so much more.  Yes, absence does make the heart grow fonder.

And so here we are this week, him doing what he does A LOT of these days, focusing with intense concentration on the intricacies of a toy robot.  It’s all robots all the time at our house.  And me, I don’t know what came over me other than I just felt like it was a good a time as any to be a little silly.  I love that he has no idea I’m even there.

We can all do with a little more silly in our lives can’t we?
