Happy Year of the Dragon

I‘m currently reading the Steve Jobs biography.  Fascinating.  Bill Gates recently had some pretty interesting comments on their tumultuous relationship.

For someone who has photograph the Aurora Borealis on their life list, I am pretty behind the 8 ball, letting one of the best opportunities in recent years pass me by.  But, here are some amazing photographs that others managed to catch.

Think the US Food and Drug Administration has your best interests at heart?  Think again.  Read about its close ties to Monsanto and find out what you can do.

Want to hear something amazing?  Check out this turntable that makes music from the rings in wood.  It will blow your mind.

I am obviously a geek because I found this monologue by Comic Sans hysterical. (Fair warning, it does include some profanity).

We don’t have this many toy cars in the house (YET!) but what a gorgeous way to put them all together.  This would blow the Little Monkey’s mind.

The Bloggess is one of my favorite people on the Internet.  Read the latest on her inspiring Travelling Red Dress.  I might just have to get one.

These escalator photos almost make me nostalgic for all the time I spent on the Tube.  Or not.

Downton Abbey is my new television obsession and I’m eagerly awaiting Season 3.  In the meantime, here are a few interesting tidbits about Highclere Castle where it’s filmed.  I’ll be visiting as soon as it opens up again in the Spring.

A cathedral made of 55,000 LED lights.  Wow.  Amazing.

Have a lovely weekend and hope the Year of the Dragon is starting off with a bang.  x

I first saw this advert from the British Heart Foundation on TV.  But man, it makes me laugh every time.  And what child of the 70s can forget Stayin’ Alive?

Must read for anyone that’s done tech support for their friends and family.

I haven’t even caught up with the ones from 2011 or even 2010, but here are 20 Books to Read Before They’re Adapted Into 2012 Movies.

Glennon Melton has an inspiring story and writes beautifully on her blog about the challenges of everyday life.  She says many of the things the rest of us are afraid to.

The Changing Nature of Photography.  And something to motivate me to print more photos.

Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.  This amazing time lapse video gives you a glimpse into its beauty.

Do you find yourself constantly multi-tasking and juggling so many things that you get none of them done?  I sure do.  Maybe it’s time to try the Power of One.

I might start exercising again just to get this.

In the sea of things written about Joe Paterno over the past week, this story by Mark Willard demonstrates, for me, more than any other why we Penn Staters thought so highly of the man.

That awkward moment when a family member adds you on Facebook. Mr. Sulu, well done.

Enjoy and happy weekend!

Have you read up on the SOPA and PIPA bills proposed in the US Congress?  Have you told your elected officials to proceed more thoughtfully before passing sweeping change set to stifle the innovation and creativity that thrive on the Internet today?

This is why I love Apple.  They don’t just make products, they make change.

No wonder I have a phobia of scuba diving.

I love the Internet.  It’s an amazing place full of stuff, an almost overwhelming amount of stuff.  But then the world is filled with amazing things to start with.  There is stuff that answers my questions, stuff that keeps me informed, stuff that inspires me to be a better person, stuff that makes me laugh, and stuff that serves absolutely no purpose at all.

So, I’ve decided that each Friday I’ll share a random assortment of the interesting things I’ve found on the Internet during the week.  If you’re bored, or it’s raining, or you need some bathroom reading, here are some ideas to get you started.

Now you folks in the UK will never have to worry about explaining the offside rule. Or will you?

I love abstract photography.  Photographer Cliff Briggie has done amazing work with paint and ice.

How could you not want a house with a slide?  Inside…  where the stairs should be…

What an inspiring way to spell out what’s important in your life.

I like Beyoncé (baby congrats!) and love Downton Abbey (come on Season 3!). Well, find out what happens when you mix Downton Abbey and Beyoncé.

OMG!  Check out this little girl.  Looking past the talent she’s obviously got, I think I am mildly horrified by the images in the mirror of the mom stage directing.  Maybe there was a less grown up song that could have showcased her talents just as well?

I think all men should react like this to our crazy girlie craft projects.

Reading beautiful children’s picture books to the Little Monkey is a delight.  I found this great selection.

I dare you to try this next time you are out for a meal with your friends or family!

Pardon me, is this your kitten?

Have a good weekend!

Note:  If you haven’t discovered Pinterest yet, I recommend checking it out.  It is by far the easiest way I’ve found yet for keeping track of and organizing all the stuff I find on the Internet that I want to remember.

Christmas Cookie Baking Music

I don’t make enough playlists.  Collections of songs that have some theme, create a mood, or that I just enjoy listening to.  In my college days I remember sitting at the CD listening station in the local music shop for hours before walking out with a couple I’d decide to buy.  And, I had stacks of mix tapes.

Now, in the digital age, I’ve got a large collection of songs in my iTunes and I like to keep adding to it.  But, honestly, I’ve gotten a bit slack.  I don’t get all the enjoyment I should out of the music I already have or the new songs I discover because I haven’t taken the time to organize them into playlists that I enjoy listening to.  How did I have time to make mix tapes but can’t manage to drag and drop a few songs into a list?

So I figure there’s no better time than Christmas to put a playlist together.  There are plenty of great classic Christmas songs out there from the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. But sometimes, well, they’re just a bit slow for my taste.  This doesn’t mean they’re not great songs, it just means I wouldn’t put them on repeat to listen to over and over again.  And they certainly wouldn’t have me dancing around the kitchen.

So here’s my list, Christmas songs that just might make you dance around the kitchen while you’re busy baking cookies.  What are your favorite Christmas songs?
